Overview

The purpose of the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 (Act) is to facilitate the delivery of infrastructure and development projects with significant regional or national benefits.

The Act creates a unique ‘one-stop-shop’ approvals process that enables an applicant to apply for consent for various approvals required for their project at the same time (as opposed to separately seeking those consents).

Approvals required under the following laws (called “specified Acts”) can be contemporaneously sought under the Act:

  • Conservation Act 1987 (including Freshwater Fisheries Regulations 1983)
  • Crown Minerals Act 1991
  • Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012
  • Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014
  • National Parks Act 1980
  • Reserves Act 1977
  • Resource Management Act 1991
  • Wildlife Act 1953

In addition to the general provisions in the Act, the Schedules of the Act set out further requirements that apply to specific approvals that are normally administered under a specified Act. These need to be read together with the sections of the Act.
