Regional Policy Statements
Regional Councils are required to prepare a regional policy statement 3730 setting out objectives, policies and methods for addressing the resource management issues of the region. 3731 It is expected that regional policy statements should address the effects of climate change issues, including natural hazards.
Example – Wellington Regional Policy Statement
Objective 21 Communities are more resilient to natural hazards, including the impacts of climate change, and people are better prepared for the consequences of natural hazard events.
Policy 29: Avoiding inappropriate subdivision and development in areas at high risk from natural hazards – Regional and district plans shall:
(a) identify areas at high risk from natural hazards; and
(b) include polices and rules to avoid inappropriate subdivision and development in those areas.
Method 14: Information about natural hazards and climate change effects.
Prepare and disseminate information about natural hazards and climate change effects in order to:
(a) guide local authority decision-making; and
(b) raise awareness and understanding of natural hazards
Method 22: Information about areas at high risk from natural hazards
Prepare and disseminate information about how to identify areas at high risk from natural hazards, as relevant to the development of hazard management strategies to guide decision making.
