District Plans

Territorial authorities are required to prepare a district plan setting out objectives, policies and rules managing land use and subdivision. 3735  It is expected that district plans should address the effects of climate changes issues, including natural hazards.

Section 10 – Natural Hazards

Objective 1: Natural hazard risk to life, property and community assets resulting from subdivision, use and development are acceptable, and tolerable for existing risk areas.

Policy 1g: The potential effects of future climate change over the next 100 years, particularly sea level rise, should be considered when assessing natural hazard risks, as explained in the NZCPS.

Method 1: Identify the acceptable, tolerable and intolerable level of natural hazard risk through consultation with the community, assessing the natural hazard extent, the severity of consequences and the event likelihood, including the projected impact of climate change
