Highly Productive Land

Aotearoa New Zealand relies on areas of highly productive soils for the growing of food and fibre. Concern about the expansion of urban areas in food producing areas (paving over productive land for housing) and growth of fragmented lifestyle properties (which can effectively prevent or limit the productive capacity of the land) led in 2022 to the creation of national policy under the RMA. It seeks to protect this land from encroachment of urban and other inappropriate activities by guiding council decision-making under the Act.
