Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (previously the New Zealand Historic Places Trust) is an autonomous Crown Entity. 1315
It is governed by an independent board whose members are appointed by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage. The Board approves the allocation of resources in accordance with the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014. It is assisted by a Māori Heritage Council.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga's functions include: 1316
- Identifying, protecting and advocating for the conservation of historic places, historic areas, wāhi tūpuna, wāhi tapu, and wāhi tapu areas.
- Maintaining the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero.
- Fostering public interest in historic place and historic areas.
- Issuing authorities for activities that will or may modify or destroy an archaeological site
- Managing historic places and buildings owned by or vested in Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
- Maintaining the National Historic Landmarks list/Ngā Manawhenua o Aotearoa me ōna Kōrero Tūturu.
- Acting as a heritage protection authority under Part 8 of the Resource Management Act
