Land Information New Zealand
Land Information New Zealand (“LINZ”) is a government department responsible for managing Crown-owned property, amongst other things. LINZ manages high country leases under the Land Act 1948, as well as the process of freeholding high country land under the Crown Pastoral Act 1998. The Commissioner of Crown Lands has the statutory responsibility for high country land owned by the Crown and has the authority to freehold it under the processes set out in the legislation. The powers of the Commissioner have been largely delegated to staff within the department. LINZ is also responsible for the management of ‘Unalienated Crown Land’ which includes a large proportion of New Zealand’s major rivers.
