Minister of Energy and Resources and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment was established in 2012 as a result of a merger between the former Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Science and Innovation, Department of Labour and Deparment of Building and Housing. It is the Government's lead business facing agency. 

Most relevant to the environment, the Ministry:

  • Ensures the markets deliver safe and affordable homes and buildings.
  • Aims to increasing the scale and pace of energy and resource development.
  • Shapes environmentally sustainable markets.
  • Manages the Provincial Growht Fund and the Regional Infrastructure Fund.
  • Manages New Zealand's science and innovation systems.
  • Advises on science, innovation, investment, biotechnology and tourism policy.

The Minister for Energy and for Resources: 

  • Oversees the management of the Crown mineral estate.
  • Controls allocation and management of petroleum and mineral permits.
  • Manages geoscience data.
  • Ensures well-functioning and competitive energy markets.
    Promotes energy productivity and efficiency improvements.
  • Supports the transition to a lower carbon economy. 

New Zealand Petroleum & Minerals is the regulator that manages New Zealand's Crown minerals estate. It is responsible for developing Crown minerals programmes, processing prospecting, exploration and mining permits, collecting royalties and enforcing mining regulations
