Duration of consents
The following default consent duration periods apply:

- Coastal permits and land use consent for reclamations – unlimited unless otherwise specified.
- Land use consents and subdivision consents -unlimited unless otherwise specified.
- Coastal permits authorising aquaculture activities - not less than 20 years (unless the applicant has requested a shorter period or a shorter period is required to ensure that adverse effects on the environment are adequately managed or a national environmental standard expressly allows a shorter period) and must not exceed 35 years.

- Resource consents for other activities (such as taking and discharging into water) – 5 years unless otherwise specified and must not exceed 35 years.
